My book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2017. (https://www.amazon.com/Prince-Purple-Rain-Studio-Sessions/dp/1538105497/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8) or go to https://www.facebook.com/...s/10915961

Listening to it. It´s cool because she talks about several songs, but I wished she talked more about the recording process. She spends some time talking about lyrics and stuff. But I recommend

No new info, as far as could tell. But it's an interesting insight into Susan Rogers way of thinking. It's pretty clear that she finds it easier to relate to the (white?) women amongst Prince's associates rather than to Prince directly. That's why she approaches the songs via the women in his life, and probably also why she overstates their influence.

She continues to overstate them because she really only knew them. My guess is Prince showed her the side he wanted to show her and told her what she wanted to hear.

I love how people on these threads cant even take sources words as fact, rather they are so tied to their own lack of ANY knowledge and keep repeating it ad nauseum. Fans that think they are part of the creative process....

I know it is important to you to defend these people at every turn (as if they need defending), but I haven't really said anything controverial. All of us identify more with some people than others. All of us find it easier to get along some people than others. Quite often the people we relate to the most are people who in one way or another are like ourselfe. Maybe they look like us, talk like us, have the same references like us, a similar background. It can be all sorts of things. It is pretty clear who Susan Rogers relates to the most (for whatever reason) out of Prince's associates.

Exactly, it is human nature to relate to people that look like you or you believe you have something in common with. Susan almost never talks about The Time.

Eveyone of those guys went on to do solo stuff and her still working but they are often ignored by Susan and many of P's other assocaites.

I am reading the book about the early Minneapolis music scence and the writer who is a white women does not sugar coat the racism in that area. It unfortunaly colors a like of the coverage of that area even still today.

I am not a part of the creative process but I certainly brought those recordings with loads of other fans and I am entitled to my opinion just like anyone else. Even Prince commented on Susan and other associates not knowing everything about his music. We are now finding out from the logs at Sunset Sound that PR music was in the works long before the film was put together and that some people who for years have been inflating their input. Wonder why that is?

This woman has no idea what was in his head. I am thankful Prince was able to speak for himself in 2015 and in the Piano and Mic tours.

.

Susan is clearly talented but her breaking down the lyrics are one sided- she is all about Susannah - which I guess makes sense for Susan without knowing he was still seeing Vanity and others so . . . her assumptions are simply her opinions and not fact.

.

We have found out since Prince died he was seeing Jill, Denise, and others while "engaged" to Susannah. In fact we have songs attributed for decades to Susannah that were not for her at all.

.

I never understood how the mythology about Susannah inspiring all these songs came about. I now know it came from Susan Rodgers, the Melvoins and Lisa and then people took their word and ran with it as fact. However, we are finding out none of them really knew Prince as they claimed because dear sweet Prince had a whole different world he maintained without them. Prince clearly had a public/private/secret life. There will be debates forever because these people want us to believe one thing when there is so much evidence that does no coincide with Susan's hypothesis of inspiration for the songs.

.

I respect Susan and her place in Prince's legacy but she is speaking without having the knowledge or not acknowledging the totality of what was really going on in Prince's life at that time.

Exactly, Susan R and the Melvoins need to knock it off. The proof is out.

Ever since Prince himself said that Susan Rogers dont' know anything I dont give her too much value. Especially since she has gone from obsurity to damn near appearing everywhere since his death to talk about Prince. One day these folks are gonna come across the wrong journalist who knows what's up and will put them in their place.

THIS! For me, "sources" like Susan Rogers should not be taken as fact simply because Prince has said otherwise in recent years and he was the creator of the music, not Susan. Talk about "repeating a story ad nauseum"? She's the one who continues repeating a story she knows well, is not the truth. Why is she pushing this nonsense? As a fan, I had NOTHING to do with the creative process and have never claimed such a thing, I just go with what PRINCE said himself. Whoever comes out to contradict after the fact and repeats it ad nauseum like she does, is lying and has an agenda. END OF STORY.

She is not acknowledging what has been learned since he transitioned. I think she needs to keep his women out of it and just talk the music, talk her craft and it is all good.

It's true that he did speak through his music, but he did also clear up misconceptions about inspirations in recent years in those interviews. I don't think he was being defensive, he was being real. Not only did he correct them in those, but in the Piano and Microphone tour concerts as well. These misconceptions are the same ones started by Susan R. herself and her clan (aka Melvoins) and she continues them after Prince already cleared it up. That's the issue here. It's disrespectful.

Prince was romancing and intimately involved with Jackie Swanson the entire time he was allegedly "engaged" to Melvoin. There were probably several others. The immediacy of socail media was non existent during the 1980's and privacy reigned supreme. Still, the facts speak for themselves. The self appointed revisionist historians and their self serving agenda aren't facts.

I agree to respect everyone's side of the story BUT when their side is repeated and taken as truth for the ages there is a problem and effects Prince's legacy for the ages.

Everyone sees their own side of the story due to their own perceptions/ interpretations but does not make it gospel truth or fact either. It is just that- either interpretation or perception. Same thing with recalling events. Some will remember something a certain way, but does not mean that is what really went down. I'm going with what Prince said because he WROTE the songs over someone who was the engineer and had no involvement in the writing/ inspiration of the lyrics.
