Browsing through the forums I found a really interesting thread (http://prince.org/msg/7/232204?&pg=1) about Prince's interest in the occult in the early 80s. Now, I'm not say Prince was part of the Occult/worshipped Satan but I strongly believe he incorporated certain elements of it into his music. I believe Prince used it to shock and cause controversy and set himself apart, but one has to wonder about the inner conflict he might have faced that made him go down that road. I know a lot of people don't like talking about this. And for those who think every word I've said so far is horse shit, feel free to visit another thread of your liking. I dig it that some people don't believe in the Devil/God. Just remember that Prince most def believed in the concept of Satan, and knew some of the things he was doing back in the 80s was purposely controversial.

To clarify -- Im not judging Prince for a small part of his life, I believe he moved on past this phase and long atoned for whatever bad vibes he was putting out early on. But some of Prince's work points to, at the very least, knowledge of the occult. In fact, 'Do whatever you want, as long as nobody gets hurt.' A central theme of Prince's most famous work. Also the main rule of the Church of Satan. js.

Some interesting posts from Blackguitaristz who witnessed all this as from a fanatic's view when it was happening:

'Man, I wish there was a way to pull up old threads. It was a very good and very insightful thread on here by some insightful cats. They were on the money with references P used to drop here and there during the early 80's (which are very obvious) regarding things satanic. Even in the 90's, it was brought up, during his "Gold" period. Shit I wasn't aware of. I've been told by people that knew P or had worked with P over time, that yeah, he DEFINATELY dabbled in the occult. I say this, if he didn't, he wanted people to think that he did. I've mentioned this a few times in the past that during the Controvery period, girls, especially black girls, thought for certain that P was evil. The album cover to Controversy gave them the straight up creeps. They said his eyes scared them. That he didn't "look" right in his eyes. Thus, that's why I certainly believe that's why he put his eye on the center of the record on the 1999 album. But yeah, many of u simply weren't around or wasn't into P during 80-83. So, u have NO idea what it was like when P was like he was during this period. So ya'll can't really defend shit ya'll know nothing about. It's TOTALLY different to have a dvd that contains the video Controversy or Let's Pretend We're Married and u watch it TODAY. As a oppossed to seeing it in 81 and 82 when it was fresh, during THOSE times and in that climate. Totally different impact. When the album 1999 was out, everybody KNEW that P was on to something "different". And it had, at times, a demonic slant on it. He blended in with some hard rock acts athat time that gave that vibe. But P, being black, stood out like a motherfucker when it came to other black acts at the time, that simply didn't give off that aura.'

Well here we go with this again. Ok lemme start with "his Aura at the time". If you were of age at the time say 16 & older you were in the midst of what was called the "satanic panic" heavily being pushed on people during that time. That look on Prince's face on the controversy album? He's always looked like that. Yes at that time all of that was new & definitely shocking coming out of a black artist. He had a dark feel or an aura.... I have to ask were you personally there around him getting this dark vibe? I've heard several people talk about an uneasy feeling concerning the 1999 stuff. To this I say Prince got the reaction he wanted. Everything he ever did was done to get attention, to get our brains tuned into his product. Sometimes wasn't all about cherry pie & apple kisses. When people talk about this I wish they would give specific examples. What exactly was occultic? I can't tell how many artist I've read or watched in their interviews they always would say that someone in the industry would give them occult literature (Bowie and Ozzy off the top of my head). I've heard it so many times that I'm convinced that it was a common practice. Big wigs in the industry see your a rising star & they make darn sure you read Crowley. It wouldn't surprise me if Prince got his hands on material around the controversy/1999 era. As far as his consistent imagery be it lyrical or music videos was probably due to being black pre 1990s. It might come as a surprise to some but African Americans historically was possibly the top people groups in America when it came to percentages of Christianity. Regardless of when he took it seriously, that part of black culture heavily impacted him. We know this because he's talked about it.....alot. The bottom line is yes I'm sure during early fame he saw some things. Did it affect him? Most likely very little if at all or he utilized it to force people to notice him. He's never said anything publicly however he consistently claimed belief in the biblical God although not taking it very serious until the late 90s. Nothing has been reported in articles of anything concerning the occult or satanism. In Mayte's book she was telling stories about his dabbling with more Eastern new age type stuff like reincarnation & meditation. Also stating that he earnestly read up on several religions. I respect that... The man made an honest attempt at reaching higher than just this. Then he finally settled on something & we all got mad at him for it lol.

I agree with you about the satanic panic of the early 80s. For me it wasn't just his sometimes spooky look but his main mantra, Do whatever you want as long as no one gets hurt. Tbh, great mantra to have, we can't complain. But combine that with his look, his yo-yoing between two extremes (black but fooled people into thinking he had white in him, constantly singing about God but in a way that didn't sound all that respectful and singing about fucking one line later, male but with female elements to his image, incorporating women in his band while being very mysoginistic sometimes, etc etc.. That's why I think if he was really interested in 'both sides' of every coin, it's not hard to believe he might have dabbled with Old Nick a little back then, maybe even returning to God right after out of fear. Prince was only human and as a rising superstar in his twenties, who knows how extreme he might have gone privately compared to his image. He found a solid religion as he got older and for that im happy for him

The do as thou Wilt doctrine, lol I forgot I wanted to touch on that. This was a mantra from beginning till becoming JW. Not only is this a common element in wealthy rock stars but a now common practice here in the west. I can remember who popularized it Crowley or Levay, but it's actually now a pervasive sentiment in American culture especially. Prince embodied do as thou Wilt because of the privilege afforded by wealth & fame. & If we're honest with ourselves Prince was a human being - We often talk about his influences, but we never take into consideration how success influenced him. His groupie endeavors was well documented. Put yourself in his shoes... Your very horny, wealthy & magnetic. & Your well aware of all of it. Alot of his music came across as hedonistic because that was probably engraved into his nature for much of his career. Post age 35 some of the hormones naturally relaxed a little & he got married, Prince relaxed the rockstar lifestyle around the emancipation era. Hormones can be so controlling, mix wealth & unfettered access to woman & you gotta pretty vain life on your hands lol.
Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one bird.

P sang "Most people in this world are born dead, but I was born alive" in Way Back Home. He tried to awaken people to what is really going on around them (schools, chemtrails, etc.) and was labelled a "conspiracy theorist". That label is meant to be derogatory and is used against anyone who actually says "The Emporer has no clothes". As for this "occult" thing - it's all been conjecture to try to explain away his "sudden" rise and hold over the music industry. Can't let it be what it actually was: drive, determination, talent, vision (and that included a host of other people as well). The source of the "he felt God was punishing him with the death of our child" is, at best, highly questionable. P NEVER denouced God in any way, shape or form but instead always sang the praises of the God he understood. Like everyone else, his spiritual journey was his own and personal even though he shared bits and pieces of it.

God is my Sugar Daddy.

Knowing that Prince was a joker, could it be that he told people to tell her that as a joke?

I do believe Prince was into some occult or even satanic stuff at one point early in his career but I don't believe in it nor do I believe it is why he was a great artist.

Whatever the case, he seemed to have found peace before he died.

I agree, in the early history of rock it wasn't embraced by the musicians. However in recent times, it has been. I've already mentioned two examples, there's countless others. Getting back to Prince, you don't think the Black Album was initially planned for release because he thought he could make money off all the satanic references? Whether or not he was a satanic follower at the time is irrelevant, he knew there'd be plenty of people who would be attracted to the darkness surrounding the album.

care to share? I've never heard of satanism in that album, just violence and sex

No doubt Prince was a hard worker! However, Prince himself spoke out on the illuminati, that is how I became aware of it. IMO I believe Prince was very spiritual and did love and have a strong connection to God and he knew a dark force/devil existed and he made us aware of this many times and he choose to stay on the light side. Which is why him being found with his clothes on backwards is disturbing as it could mean he was gotten by evil. He had also recently called out some that were practicing this and refused to participate in shows with them(Jay Z) and publicly stating why.

rock and roll was called the "devil's music" in the beginning by the adults, not the kids. It fucked with the pioneer's heads because Elvis, Jerry Lee, Little Richard were raised in church and it really caused some guilt in them. Elvis once asked Jerry Lee "you think I'm singing the devil's music?" Jerry said "Hell, you are the devil bhoy!". Those guys did NOT enjoy it being called the devil's music. Little Richard was famous for going back and forth between rock and the church. Not the same as these english fucks who want to get into the crowley shit.

there are a couple theories, one is that warners told him that they would not do any promotion for the album and that's when Prince made the about face but the most popular one is the story of excstasy with ingrid chavez and how he saw god and thought the black album was a work of the devil and evil. He then made lovesexy. I'm sure you know all this BTW.

some people have said that overt religiousity is a response to wild and loose living in youth. I grew up in church and the most common stories were how fucked up people were before they got saved, how much they liked dick or drugs or whatever until jesus saved them. It's a compensatory thing. I do know that dez has spoken out about P's lyrics and the guilt he felt looking out and seeing 13 year old girls sing along. but honestly, in any band there are issues, most bands do not stay together long it's just a fact of rock and roll life.

the writing in the lovesexy program tells the story, it seems prince was a bit upset at rap as a coming force and that he was slipping into nostalgia because of it, i'd say the black album was by and large a response to rap, the people saying he lost his funk and just his always festering frustration over everything known to man. he thought it was inspired by the devil and he called the devil spooky electric on lovesexy. I never heard anything satanic on the black album, just lots of anger and rage and humor too.

I'm glad this is being revisited. There was a great post about this before.

Either way; gimmick or not, incredulous, superstition or not, or simply that ANY COLOR, NUMBER OR SEASON can be invoked to denote SOMETHING because the human experience is limited. ..who knows. But a simple google search reveals issues with Lotusflow3r (3 hexagons within each other 6,6,6)...the originally obvious 1999 album cover either an homage to the super bowl trophy or phallic carnage 666 Ann and the all seeing eye upside down.

Peep this bit on 20ten referencing Ishtar and Saturn

Also, something of curiosity. When news hit that P was dead some ppl like me; looked towards his recent deals and his works and masters reverting back to himself soon in installations....and wondered if he was killed.

The same thing with the first posthumous Michael Jackson album THIS IS IT which showcased a "baphomet-like" cover pose.

Fast forward to Prince's 4ever which, though I've never bought it, showcased frustrated pictures from a photographer's session that apparently P wanted struck from "THE ORG" after his JW conversion.

Interestingly. The inner photos of the album show P striking a pose and casting a very "baphomet-like" shadow on the wall.

Now is this invoking satanic imagery to evoke a reaction from rebellious kids and then lead them to his God stuff or is it just using the imagery for publicity, like the metal band VENOM has aptly admitted to?

It's something to be discussed.

Bear on mind that virtually anything in NATURE can be invoked to be devilish in many strict cultures, especially sects of Christianity, so paranoid are they all about recognizing the earth.

Either way it's a legacy discussion that NEEDS TO BE HEARD
"Damn Dolores, pick another subject, please..."

I remember seeing some videos on YT about someone that claimed there was some occultist thing going on between Prince and Vanity. That she used to see ghosts in houses or something like that, that's why Prince ultimately ended up bulldozing houses down. Will try to find the link to those.

She also claimed that she used to hover over her bed at night when the demons were attacking her. eek

hovering over a bed seems to be a common story, I once thought I did when i was a teen, to this day I couldn't tell you if it was real or a dream but I remember it. I've seen an excorcism or what was called an excorcism once, lots of strange things happened during it but I still think it may have been a psychological trauma like split personality or something. That doesn't explain everything i saw though.

Maybe it was her survival strategy. Didn't she say there was sexual abuse in her home environment as a child?

there are a couple theories, one is that warners told him that they would not do any promotion for the album and that's when Prince made the about face but the most popular one is the story of excstasy with ingrid chavez and how he saw god and thought the black album was a work of the devil and evil. He then made lovesexy. I'm sure you know all this BTW.

Yeah I do, but I wasn't talking about why he shelved it ... I was talking about why he made it. I mean, a completely black cover? I really think he wanted to give the impression it was all about satan, especially Bob George, because he thought it would boost sales.

I never heard anything satanic on the black album, just lots of anger and rage and humor too.

The cover of the album aside, you didn't get the devil-vibe with Bob George?

maybe he did that deal with the devil to get fame with pruple rain....and prince screwed over the devil by his overt use of God in the lyrics...so the devil took his fame away little by little

But Prince died an icon and is still famous.

Those Ytube vids have bogus info; says things with no way to substantiate. It is fanfic. I do believe what Vanity herself said about demonic activity in her life.

I do no tknow much about Prince and the occult; thi thread is an eye opener.
