I will buy it on kindle. A discount 4 original buyers would be nice but if not I'll buy it anyway. Some people may not realize that this is a labor of love, probably totally unprofitable if you counted working hours spend on it vs. money made off the sales. It's worth supporting. Just one thing Duane if I may: I was really sad that my kindle edition didn't have an index at the end and I offered a paper version to a friend and just visited her and realized her book did have an index. It can be super useful if you wanna research one particular song and I'd really love my "paperback" kindle edition to have one wink

The kindle didn't have an index? I didn't go through the kindle to check it but that isn't right. A lot of work went into getting the index right, so thank you for that info. I'll look into that. One of the fun things is being able to see what is covered in the index and then looking it up in the main text.

Thank you for the update and the support. Seriously this has been a blast and I love that so many fans/fams have come to me about how it touched them. That really does make it all worth it.

Thank YOU for all the hard work and doing it right.hug
And yeah no index on my kindle. Could be a bug on mine only if it was unintended,IDK, maybe other kindle users can confirm whether they have an index or not, but I definitely don't neutral

That is what I'm hoping! Working hard on trying to get to that schedule.

My book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2017. (https://www.amazon.com/Prince-Purple-Rain-Studio-Sessions/dp/1538105497/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8) or go to https://www.facebook.com/...s/10915961

You do know that on the Kindle you can just tap the Search field at the top and type what you're looking for, don't you? All Kindle books are indexed when they are downloaded.

Hopefully the extra material will be made available as a free download for those of us who bought the hardback. I thought the book was excellent but I won't be buying it again just to get a bit of extra content, discounted or not.

Already? Smh. I’ve barely made it through my hardback copy, will just wait for others to relay the contents of future books online.

I do indeed and come to think of it it sort of equals an index, you're right. I just thought having a proper alphabetical index was cooler than just a search option.

annoying as fuck. A book should not be like a bloody mobile phone with a new upgrade after you've just paid! Get it right & then release it. I thn anyone who has paid should recieve the updated parts in digital format for free...not ideal BUT at least its a good gesture. He needs to keep the trust or else we wont be buying any book that folows this one.

To an extent I agree, by which I mean I don't agree at all as a successful hardback leading to a paperback edition with updates has been the method of non fiction releases for decades now.

In an ideal world maybe everyone would get things right first time and there'd never be more than a single edition of everything but hey, a successful hardback book about the intricacies of Prince in the studio, who'd have thought that'd be a big success?

This reminds me of the time my parents bought a World Book Encyclopedia when I was 8. Of course, the thing was outdated the second they bought it. So every year, the World Book people would offer a yearbook that you could buy for a hefty additional charge. It came with stickers that you could paste into your original set, alerting you to the fact that there was updated information in such-and-such yearbook.

After a few years of that (and of the original set looking increasingly like crap with all the stickers that you actually had to lick and put in there), my dad said (in true "dad" fashion), "Screw it. I'm not giving them any more money. Use the encyclopedia at school. That's what I pay taxes for." lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

You're right, of course. The difference is that with most topics I'm usually okay with having almost all the information, so I don't worry about what I'm missing in later editions. However, I want to know everything that comes out when it comes to this subject. And I want even more of Duane's research to be readily available, so I'm glad the book's been received well enough to lead to greater cooperation from associates and for an expanded paperback edition.

Thank you! I am really excited about this expanded update. The hardback was published in November 2017 and once the book had been out for a few months, the publisher came to me and said that they planned to release the paperback version in November 2018. I explained to them that once the hardback version was published, a number of additional people who worked with Prince saw it and agreed to speak to me so I offered to update the paperback to get this new information out there. I told them that I think that an expanded and updated version would be much better than just the regular paperback and they seemed intrigued. Once the publisher approved of the idea, I took three months off from work and did the follow up interviews, added the new dates, new songs, new quotes, new sessions and updated whatever I could to give as much value to this project as possible. This isn't just an extra chapter written to seem bigger, I went through every page and added whatever new content I felt fit including over two dozen dates that are completely new or updated with information.

The paperback will be released on the 1 year anniversary of the publication of the hardback. I'M TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO GET A DISCOUNT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO PURCHASED THE HARDBACK COPY and hope to have details soon. To those who are excited about this expanded version, I'm also offering a way to get a signed and numbered copy of the paperback as well as getting your name in the expanded version of the book (the details of that are on DuaneTudahl.com).

The hardback was my first book and is still my baby. I am very proud of it and it still stands on it’s own, but there is new content in the paperback that is really worth getting as well. My goal is to make sure that Prince’s career is documented as completely and accurately as possible and so I had a choice of either sitting on the new information and agreeing to just reprinting the hardback as a paperback with no changes or finding a way to get the new details out to everyone. I chose the extra work of adding the content because I know I would want to know more about Prince’s creative history.

I’m grateful for all of the support. I’m honored that so many people have enjoyed this project of passion and that the outpouring for new material has been so positive. I’m working hard on future books and the positivity and energy that everyone is offereing has been inspiring.

I can’t wait to get this out in November to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of the publication of the hardback.

[Edited 7/8/18 16:18pm]

It does appear rather soon to be releasing an updated edition, but your reasoning makes perfect sense. I throughly enjoyed the hardback and will likely purchase the paperback in due time. Are you able to offer us any teasers? For instance, do any of the new dates pertain to unreleased songs that the fans aren't aware of? (I'm sure that would pique people's interest).

Also Duane, I would like to offer you my thanks. I wrote an university assignment earlier this year using Prince as a case study to explore theoretical models of creativity (Gregory Feist's Functional Model of the Creative Personality and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Systems Model of Creativity, if you are interested). Your book proved absolutely invaluable.

Does anyone know if this new and expanded edition will have newly uncovered songs and sessions not-already-reported-about? Or will it just be more info about existing sessions and a few additonal interviews with key people from the era???

Actually, I wasn't excusing laziness. I was attempting to make your comment "Is reading Duane's reply that much of a hassle?" a useful one, instead of just letting it lie there, rude and unhelpful, by including in my reply the information that you left out of yours (I guess it was too much of a hassle for you). My mistake. I should have just responded to the original comment by saying "madhouseman is the author of the book--see his reply above." I forget sometimes that while you sometimes come on the .org in a helpful mood, other times you just seem to be looking for someone to dump on. I should have just left your comment alone to do its rather pointless job. My apologies. You do you, Bart.

I'm not sure if you are joking or not, but just in case you aren't, the book is coming out a full year (to the day in fact) after the publication and you don't HAVE to buy it. lol

I sincerely hope you do because it is pretty cool and includes a lot of new stuff that came to light after the first one was published, but the Hardback is still a solid book and worthy of being on your shelf. The expanded book contains some new dates, new songs, new quotes and new stories but it isn't mandatory. Only if you enjoyed the first book enough to want seconds.

I worked really hard on the book and the updated/expanded version and I'm working really hard on future volumes. As a fan, these are the books I want to read and I hope that translates to others wanting the same thing.

My goal is to help get the word about Prince out there to those who don't understand how incredible he is. I hope this book series helps.

Thank you all for the support. It seriously means a lot to me.

Not to overly labour the point but I do think people have every right to be pissed. I think dismissing opinions with a 'you dont have to buy it' is also quite disrespectful....readers bought it in good faith etc. I still feel the right & proper thing would be to send the new sections in digitised formats to anyone who invested originally in the project. It may also instil a bit of potential customer confidence in your other upcoming projects.

the original is a great book .. the market seems to do the bonus content with everything ... music .. video games .. books ... can't really blame duane for playing the game ... i think the take away is that this new edition not only has new info but could help the next book come to exist .. for that reason alone i would consider a purchase without the new content .. i would love the new content in a separate book but it also makes sense to have it all in one place chronologically .. annoying as it is .. i don't see any ill will or market manipulation by duane ... it just is what it is and he has opened the door to more imput and future books ... that is all a good thing

I complained about the paperback (even expanded) costing the same as the hardcover, and that does still seem a bit strange to me, but the idea that Duane is somehow working people over on this confuses me. What exactly did people want him to do? He didn't rush the first edition without doing proper research--he'd worked on it for years, and shared some portions of the book's information here for years. It's the product of a lot of work. Now, as he's explained, other information and interviews have become available--what did you want done with it? Did you want Duane to just go "Oh well, I've done the Purple Rain book--so I just won't ask anything else about that period, and if someone says something relating to 1983 and 1984 I'll just go "Lalalalalalala I can't hear you"--and if I accidentally learn something, I'll keep it to myself for several years instead of putting it into the paperback edition that it's time to release anyway."

Including the new information in the new edition is the right thing to do. And, since it's incorporated throughout the book, that means rewriting portions, reformatting (I assume) and higher production costs than just reprinting the same book again. I still would like it to cost a bit less than the original, but I doubt that's really on Duane.

As to disrepecting people--nothing Duane's said on here even begins to resemble disrespect.

yeahthat I'd rather Duane include any newly discovered info than to hold it back. Some of y'all are acting like he held it back from the first edition to trick you into buying a second copy or something. If you don't want to buy it a second time, then don't. Nobody is screwing you over. lol
