Rock Hard In a Funky Place

Camille Project

the Black Album

Prince
Eric Leeds

Atlanta Bliss

Susannah Melvoin
Camille

There isn't much background information on the Black album cuts, yet.

Sheila E 95% of the time, has never gone into talk of individual songs,

and Cat in an interview said: The Black Album was the first time Prince got me on tape recording. It was intense. I can't even go into that right now, because, it's too intense. The album didn't really have any production. It was spur of the moment. The Black Album was about personal things he was going through, which is why I don't want to discuss it.

I hope one day soon she can talk a little more about what she knows.

Along with others who took part in the album.

Basic tracking took place on 28 October 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California

Does anybody know you're here?
This house of ill-repute (Ooohh honey I'm scared of you)
Trying to deal with all your fears
I guess this is what you get for being cute (Cute, cute)

Soaked in banana cologne
No wonder you're all alone
It's written all over your face
You're just-a rock hard in a funky place

Rock hard in a funky place

[Verse 2]
Here comes a lady so you cover up
She's a freaked out
Funky electric mama with double cups
Say you, you could cop if you wanted to
Because something near your leg
Is haunting you, such a disgrace
You're rock hard in a funky place, ow!

[Chorus]
Rock hard in a funky place

[Verse 3]
You was working on the line
You could drop on her
But you couldn't concentrate
When your dick so hard
Maybe if you cop a nut in the car (Maybe if you cop a nut in the car)
Maybe you could think
About playing guitar

(Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock)
(Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock)
Oh yeah

[Chorus]
Rock hard in a funky place

[Vesre 4]
All you're looking for is love
Or a reason to believe there's a God above
Pretty soon you'll get enough
And head back to a life so tough
I just hate to see an erection go to waste
I'm just-a rock hard in a funky place

[Chorus]
Rock hard in a funky place
Say it
Rock hard in a funky place
Rock hard in a funky place
Oohh for rock hard in a funky place
You rock hard in a funky place
Say it, you'all

[Bridge]
(Rock, rock)
What? (rock, rock, rock, rock)
We got to go, y'all
Tune in next week (rock, rock)
Same time (rock, rock)
Same boogie (rock, rock, rock, rock, rock hard)
Oohhh yeah (rock, rock, rock, rock)
We will rock, y'all (rock, rock)

[Outro]
But until then keep your finger on the trigger
That's the only way it'll get bigger
(What kind of fuck ending was that?)

"Sheila E, and I were in Los Angeles, doing The Tonight Show with my brother Alan that night," remembers Eric Leeds.

"Early the next morning, at the airport, Alan said, all jaunty, 'Okay, got some news for you!" laughs Eric, "and my first reaction was 'Oh shit!' I was very disappointed that it was shelved for a very practical reason-I owned a song on that album!" To lose out was the brilliant "Rock Hard in a Funky Place," including Eric's nasty sax line (plucked from an unreleased, jazzy Leeds original called "Peaemaker").

On Oct. 28, 1986, Prince recorded a slinky, horn-heavy song named "Rockhard in a Funky Place." It would spend the next 14 months lined up for release on three shelved albums -- and then vanish (legally speaking, anyway) for another seven years.

The song's distinctive horn line was crafted by saxophonist Eric Leeds. "It’s just the melody of a song of mine called ‘Pacemaker,'" he told the Prince Podcast. "Prince wanted this line for 'Rockhard in a Funky Place,' and I think I had it half done. He wanted something that was really out there. So I kind of completed the line for that."

Leeds says he was inspired by the '60s avant-garde jazz pioneer Eric Dolphy. "This cat was, like, really out there. He was an early influence on me. So I said, 'OK, I'm gonna try to be Eric Dolphy for a minute. It was very angular, almost a mathematical kind of thing. For every time the line went up, I wanted to turn it around and have it come down in a similar fashion, interval-wise."

"Rockhard" was originally slated – along with tracks such as "Housequake" and "Strange Relationship" – for Camille, an album that found Prince pitch-shifting his voice while adopting the titular pseudonym's female personality.

Scheduled for an early 1987 release, Camille was instead merged with Dream Factory, a double album Prince had been compiling with the Revolution, to create the triple-disc Crystal Ball. However, his label balked at the scope of this project -- and by some minor miracle, Prince actually took their advice.

"We decided that if he eliminated some things we didn't think were as strong, we would have a much better album," former Warner Bros. CEO Mo Ostin told Billboard. "Actually [longtime Warner Bros. president] Lenny [Waronker] had a conversation with him, and he went along with it." The resulting trimmed-down double album Sign O' the Times was an undisputed masterpiece, but did not include "Rockhard in a Funky Place."

The song - at least part of it - did come along for the accompanying tour, though. Leeds' horn line can be heard at the tail end of "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" in the Sign O' the Times concert film.

Suddenly eager to re-connect with longtime fans frustrated by his recent crossover success, Prince pushed past another round of label objections, nixed plans to tour in support of Sign O' the Times in the United States, and instead scheduled the dance-heavy, darkly themed The Black Album for release just nine months after Times. "Rockhard in a Funky Place" was finally going to get its day in the sunshine.

And then, just as quickly and for reasons that we may never fully understand, Prince cancelled the release plans, personally paying for the destruction over over 500,000 copies of the album. While it was quickly and widely available as a bootleg, it would be seven more years before he conceded to the album's official release - most likely as part of his long battle to be released from his contract with Warner Bros.

Leeds, who says he still plays 'Pacemaker' live with his current group LP Music, seems completely unfazed by the long road "Rockhard" took to get legally released. "It was more of an exercise than anything else. Prince was really open to that kind of stuff, I was just very fortunate that he gave me those opportunities."

There are always parts of songs that seem to be saying something that are different from the lyrics

Like when he yells "Come back Nikki Come back..." what he says after that I have to bend the printed lyrics in my mind to fit what he is screaming on the album

I think this was Prince at the top of his game. It's a song that sounds so effortless that some might think it throwaway, but it's actually brilliant - It's Prince commanding his talent, band and station at that specific time. It's not artsy-fartsy or too deep (both modes of Prince which I love), but I think it's confident and cool in a uniquely Prince way. It's also funny and funky as fuck, so what more could you ask for?

Just love it and whole heartedly endorse all you have 2 say. Dirty, but dirty funky too - this is pure nasty ass Prince (Camille). It is like he is poking his tongue out at us why he sings it. I ain't going to say anymore as you guys have pretty much said it all.

.

Camille may have been scared of Spooky Electric and all that he crawls for, but in reality she was just a bitch ho bitch and a nasty ho as Sheila may put it. Camille is the shit. She/he knew that life wasn't a game of cards motherfucker. Sorry feeling a bit craazzaayyy today.

Props to Eric, I just LOVE that sax line!
All this time I listened to this track just waiting for that killer sax line to come up, but never really payed too much attention to the lyrics until I saw them posted here lol. It’s a very silly/vulgar song, but damn is it badass!

He had an epiphany on the night of Dec 1 1987, meeting Ingrid Chavez and then seeing his name spelt out in flowers, and realising if he was 2 die and his soul 2 take, he would be judged by the last thing he left behind, the evil Black Album. He realised Spooky Electric had made Camille create something evil, called the Black Album, Camille started 2 cry, for Spooky Electric was all he crawled for but God, Love and Positivity embolded Camille thru the power of Lovesexy and the Black album was blown away - now Camille had seen the light and the power of Lovesexy. The rain began 2 fall as God helped create a divine masterpiece.

Spooky electric had not been killed, but he was neutralised in the belly of the beast, for Lovesexy is the 1 until his job is done, he crossed over the line.

.

Sorry ahd to entertain this guy
