Woah, yeah.... there's some strong confusion going on here.

Are people really thinking that all the movies shot on film from the 1890s to early 2000s are really considered SD, as in the same quality as video?

Weird.

Obviouisly, 35mm/70mm, etc, optical formats indeed, are far higher quality than video, SD or HD.

Film is much higher in resolution than Blu ray. Blu rays feature compressed versions of movies - usually well compressed, when made properly, but compressed none the less. Not that it matters. A blu ray can hold enouigh information that a well mastered movie on blu ray can look absolutely fantastic.

However, blu ray is not the same as film, and film is not SD.

As for the Rave concert, it was shot on video, and unfortunately at a barely professional level. This and even more so the Aladdin concert from 2001/2002 suffer from the late 90s/early 2000s problem of 'hey, video's cheap, and no one will notice the difference'.... not true obviously.

The people producing those DVDs had a very low quality control standard. Witness the interlacing problem (this is especially evident on the Aladdin DVD).. This should never happen on a professionally produced DVD.

So yeah, releasing the Rave concert on blu ray would work for posterity only, there's really not much point... it's the video equivalent of converting some 128kbps mp3s to 24/192 FLAC in hopes that they will sound better. They won't. You're just putting a shitty sounding file in a bigger box.

So they're going from his most popular album to a piano rehearsal to one of his least popular albums? Looks like there is not much plan behind this and they release whatever they can find. If "the estate" (whoever or whatever that is) want folks to lose interest in Prince, they're doing an excellent job. [Edited 1/2/19 8:13am]

Rite???? Look at Lisa Stansfiield's amazing boxed set! Every single studio album remastered with bonus tracks/mixes and vault (if I'm not mistaken!) Why can't The Estate (whoever they are) do the same thing from "For You" all the way up to "Lovesexy" and include "The Black Album" with a similar presentation? Maybe call it "The Purple Box." I don't get it. Instead, we're getting reissues of his crappier, latter day material instead of what made him a star 2 begin with. I'd LOVE "Dirty Mind," "Controversy" and "1999" all remastered with bonus/vault tracks! I agree with your last statement wholeheartedly. mad

Many less popular and far less legendary artists receive the deluxe reissue treatment and have their releases handled with care. I do believe though, that most of those releases are aimed at hardcore fans and created with consideration toward them. Prince's Estate seems to be willfully ignoring Prince's core fanbase and as of yet, has not really geared a single release to their desires and needs.

I have serious faith in WBR with this new 1999 deluxe package they're currently working on. With the last Piano & Microphone 1983 project and how it was handled. I now have faith in them that they will do right by Prince's(R.I.P.) fans & legacy.

[Edited 1/12/19 11:23am]

So Prince, whom fought 4 his first record deal & got it, fought 4 a movie deal & got it, fought 4 freedom from his WB contract & got it, fought 4 his masters & got them.Gets a curable illness & says 2 himself ok, I'm done. "Life is a Box Of Chocolates"

To me besides the well crafted, immaculately put together Piano & Microphone 1983 project WBR seems VERY lazy & bitter toward most Prince(R.I.P.) projects they've handled since his transitioning. It's almost like they don't care. Even though I know part of the problem was The estate disorganized state it was in with the siblings feuding. But Prince(R.I.P.) signed a deal with them not long before he transitioned so it's not like they didn't know what to do. They just simply don't care about the hardcore fans AT ALL.

they must not care about all the money they could be sucking out of them...

Good Lord I'm confused! You are all either having a joke, being serious or taking the piss - I just can't tell anymore!!!

However, for the record, any feature film or other content SHOT ON FILM is classed as OPTICAL! It is not SD, it is not HD, it is not even UHD! IT IS OPTICAL.

.

For the record: 'photochemical' is the word you were looking for, not 'optical'.
PLEASE stop talking about things you have no clue about.

I just don't get it. Lisa Stansfield was popular (in The States, at least) for only her first two albums. She has her entire discography turned into 3 CD-sets (each one) with bonus and extended mixes. Crazy, huh???? Who would have thought? With Prince, you'd think that WB would have jumped right ON his passing (cuz they're greedy m.f.'s) and offered a boxed set (a la Stansfield) and literally cashed RIGHT IN. Smh. Much luv, OperatingThetan!

Also, wanted 2 mention the Tabu Reborn 2013 Series. Some hit titles and some really SHIT titles from virtually unheard of artists, but all remastered (to a point) represented and re-embraced by the fans of a popular and generous label to give the fans what they've been waiting 4. With all due respect to our Royal One, a Purple Box would have been a perfect gift 2 the fans and each box would contain a purple (crystal) raindrop. Can u imAGINE how HUGE a seller that would be, but 4 some reason, WB jerks the plan every time. Very disappointing and disrespectful 2 the Creator of His Genius which MADE them the $ 2bgin with. Thoughts on a cold Sunday with luv. <3

You've not picked a great example there with the Tabu Reborn Series considering how most of the bonus tracks were vinyl rips of less than mint condition records.

WB isn't any more greedy than any other company. Also, here relatively little output was probably all in one spot and well-organized. Prince's crap is all over the place, poorly labeled, and probably a pain in the ass to assemble. It's business, just like every other label that ever existed.

The chemical reaction of molecules on film stock when they come into contact with photons isn't what is being discussed.

What has been discussed is the optical process in projection and the telecine process allowing a small negative to be expanded massively with no visible loss of quality.

I totally agree. A big issue is also whether or not artists have any interests in revisiting their catalogue.

Some artists get very involved and then we have exceptional reissues. Some artists even acquire back their own masters and release their back catalogue independently.

Yet you get some artists who just more forward and simply are not interested in such things.

Sadly I feel Prince never had any great interest in revisiting his back catalogue, other than reworking some tracks in his later years. But we'll never know what could have been, after all, he may have changed his mind as he got older.

Because of this conversation, the box set has been pushed back to April, 8th...
Maybe to release the vinyls at the same time?
But what will be released Instead on march, 8th?
That doesn't sound good for the future of these re releases...

I stand corrected. Thank u and I concur. Though it was nice 2 have the original albums remastered, the bonus tracks WERE lifted from "less than mint condition records." sad <3

Er, what? Are you for real? You're kidding, right?

Just because Prince is dead, which is very sad, doesn't mean we have to demean him and his work by pretending everything he touched turned to gold. Of course, he released some garbage. Doesn't take away from his great work.

Nobody is doubting his work rate. But you have to understand that not everyone likes EVERYTHING that Prince released. It stands to reason that if you record a thousand songs there's bound to be a dud or two in there. Purple And Gold being just one example.
