Predictions / Speculation RE: Sony Legacy Release Waves 2020

So the rumour mill is saying that the next wave of Legacy releases should be The Rainbow Children along with the various One Nite Alone related albums. This being the case I decided to take a look at what albums were remaining from the 1995 - 2010 pool that Sony has licence to publish as of now.

I'm guessing that Sony will be keen to publish the remaining albums before the end of the year so they can move straight on to the Warner era LPs in 2021.

The Gold Versace Experience
(1995) WAVE 3
Chaos And Disorder
(1996) WAVE 3
Emancipation
(1996) WAVE 3

Crystal Ball
(1998)
The Truth
(1998)
The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale
(1999)
Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic
(1999) WAVE 2
Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic
(2001) WAVE 2

The Rainbow Children
(2001) Rumoured WAVE 4
One Nite Alone...
(2002) Rumoured WAVE 4
One Nite Alone... Live!
(2002) Rumoured WAVE 4
One Nite Alone... The Aftershow: It Ain't Over
(2002) Rumoured WAVE 4

Xpectation
(2003)
N.E.W.S.
(2003)
Musicology
(2004) WAVE 1
The Chocolate Invasion
(2004)
The Slaughterhouse
(2004)
C-Note
(2004)
3121
(2006) WAVE 1
Planet Earth
(2007) WAVE 1

Indigo Nights
(2008)
Lotusflow3r
(2009)
MPLSound
(2009)
20Ten
(2010)

If we take a look at how these waves are structured then I'm guessing the remaining waves will look something like this...

Crystal Ball
(1998) The Truth (1998) The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale (1999)

This follows suite with Wave 3. A 3CD set, a sample tape / bonus LP, and a contractually obliged Warner LP.

Xpectation
(2003) N.E.W.S. (2003)

Two albums from the same year with an instrumental theme

The Chocolate Invasion (2004) The Slaughterhouse (2004) C-Note (2004)
Three collections from the same year with a digital only theme

Lotusflow3r
(2009) MPLSound (2009) 20Ten (2010) [maybe Indigo Nights (2008)?]

The remaining albums from the tail end of the timeline

I could be wrong, but these look like the most logical groupings.

But what are your thoughts? Do you think they'll be released in a different manor? Are there any particular releases or waves you are looking forward to? Do you think we'll see all of the 1995 - 2010 pool released by the end of this year, of is that simply not long enough?

Somehow, it appears WB still have the rights to The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale. God knows why they let Prince take TGE and C&D with him, but kept that one.

Yep, my prediction would be basically the same as the OP. And presumably the first round of 2021 will be D&P/Love Symbol/Come, given that fans have been awaiting the vinyl reissues of those since 2016.

Clearly there remains a great confusion between the WB deal on one hand and the Sony Legacy deal on the other.

The catalogue is split between 2 labels, and this thread is about the Sony Legacy releases, while the records you mention are still in the end of WB.

I'd love to see "Indigo Nights" get a physical release outside of the book, with proper packaging.

Doubt it will ever happen, but it would be nice to see.

As far as I was aware from reading the 2018 announcement, the rights to those albums switch over to Sony Legacy in 2021, unless there's something I've misunderstood. Perfectly happy to be corrected on this. *shrug* And WB doesn't seem interested in reissuing those ones on vinyl while it still has the rights to them. Hence, I'm assuming it's Sony Legacy who'll be doing so.

My mistake if it's already been established that Sony Legacy will be taking over. For me it wasn't clear at all what will happen to the WB "owned" catalogue after the 2014 deal ends.

From the original press release

https://variety.com/2018/biz/news/prince-estate-strikes-deal-with-sony-music-for-35-catalog-albums-1202858666

Starting in 2021, Sony/Legacy’s distribution rights will be expanded to include 12 Prince non-soundtrack catalog albums, featuring music recorded by the artist from the 1978-1996 era for distribution in the United States. Music from this period covered under the agreement includes the albums “Prince” (1979), “Dirty Mind” (1980), “Controversy” (1981), “1999” (1982), “Around the World in a Day” (1985), “Sign ‘O’ The Times” (1987), “Lovesexy” (1988), “Diamonds and Pearls” (1991) and “[Love Symbol]” (1992), and “much more,” the announcement reads.

Prince’s two all-time top-selling albums, “Purple Rain” (1984) and “Batman” (1989), as well as “Parade” (1986) and “Graffiti Bridge” (1990), are not included in this Sony deal; they are soundtrack recordings to Warner Bros. films and are subject to different terms. Also missing are several albums from the latter half of Prince’s career, as well as a few Warner titles including “The Black Album,” originally scheduled for release in 1987 but not issued until seven years later.

Ok, so if WB has one more year on these titles why would they go with Parade next like rumoured. If they have one more bite it surely would be SOTT

with a a few exceptions...if there is not new content I am not likely to buy it. I bought nearly everything he put out (in shops) I am not too inclined to buy it again. Even if the cds are long unplayable or lost.

Stupid touch pad!

Cont... that being said, many of these were never sold in physical form.... so I hope to be able to buy them and support the estate and future releases...

That's the latest rumor. Parade Deluxe, which is already completed, is getting pushed until next year and SOTT Deluxe is jumping the line.

I don't really understand the logic behind that since they'd only be able to sell it for less than a year but maybe it would be a limited print run like the 1999 Deluxe release or they're planning to make some sort of joint deal with Sony to keep it in print.

Another rumor is that the 2014 deal Prince signed with WB, basically made it where WB gets a finger in the pie of any studio vault material recorded while Prince was under contract with them.

We'll have to wait and see if any of that is true.

Sony published last year there would be three phases of re release of the 95/2010 era : 2019, 2020 and 2021.
So it s not ending this year.

C-NOTE would be a better fit on this upcoming 'One Nite Alone'-era set. I think those albums that haven't yet had a physical release (Xpectation, C-NOTE, The Chocoloate Invasion, The Slaughterhouse) should have priority.

I know there was no booklet at the time for Planet Earth, Versace, C note, News, Xpectation, etc. Which was already a thievery.
.
But Sony could have done it for the reissues. Printed lyrics are the minimum + photos
