Anybody who ever says "The Beatles" is just plain being..... aaargh..... fryingpan disbelief

[rhymes with smignorant]... Hell it can even be quantified.

I won't start it. I'd have to be here for a long time.

1. OASIS (absolutely)/VELVET UNDERGROUND [A TIE]
2. The Grateful Dead/Jimmy Buffet/George Thorogood (almost any stuff on the playlist for "bikers" towing their rides to Sturgis)

3. Def Leppard

4. Dave Matthews Band

5. Coldplay

6. JOURNEY

this does not consider Jonases/One Direction/NKOTB/NSYNC/BSB or any of that teen crap to be a band... although I COULD argue otherwise in the event somone mentioned a Doo Wop band etc... (primarily cause they may have written their songs or sang them impeccably well)

Honorable mention:

John Mayer

Green Day

(Nirvana don't count because they only did 3 albums and an EP and ended prematurely, but 3/4 were actually pretty great for the genre)

Bands like Linkin Park don't count either because they were of their element and for their respective fan bases, were clique enough and are NOT considered the TOP TIER of anything...therefore they FIT and are NOT OVERLY RATED. Same applies to Limp Bizkit, cause they are UNDER rated. (musically great, lyrically awful most of the time and NOBODY cares anymore)

I don't know about overrated but I'd say Coldplay are the most underrated.

I've been coming on this website for years and I've never seen anyone rate them. They've written some of the best melodies of the past 15 years, their album tracks are even better tvan their singles, they are great live, and they dint take themselves too seriously. Thumbs up in my book.

I love Coldplay. Top ten of concerts I’ve been to and that was their most recent tour. I’m mad with myself that I’ve waited so long to se them and missed all the previous years.

I could claim you are just as ignorant as those citing the Beatles by listing the best band of the 60s in the VU. biggrin

I understand that The Beatles are legends and yada yada yada but that doesn't mean that their music isn't terrible (it is, IMO). No one is worthy of unanimous praise, and it is this very attitude among some Beatles fans that contributes to them being the most overrated band ever.

Besides, what does "overrated" mean anyway? It's just another way of saying:"I don't like this band."

The title of the thread is "Your most overrated bands". In other words, it's all about opinions. They are the bands that I find to be grossly overrated. Whether or not they are "recognised" in 100 years is completely irrelevant. I still consider them to be overrated.

Also, if you consider the thread to be so stupid, why even post in it in the first place? Was it purely just to give your definition of what you consider to be overrated or not and to tell us all how stupid the thread is? Or did you have something more substantial to add?

Taste is something you can acquire and develop.
Taste is being able to try any music, especially the ones that get you (initially)
out of your zone of comfort.

So there's really no concept of taste in music,
it's only how much of the musical panorama you've been able to digest so far.
The more diverse the music, the more taste you acquire, because of
your ever expanding references and readjustements (when you really get a grasp of The Beatles,
you usually get that they pretty much wrote the Book on pop music, and what came afterwards
was mostly developments and variations).

Its not about 'taste' only. Some bands ARE overrated. Many posted are NOT. They deserve all the accolades they have received. Having said that, that doesnt mean that those don't adhere to objective judgment and are only going by their own likes/dislikes.

I've heard all those songs before. Don't like any of them. I appreciate the effort but it's just not the kind of music I like. It's not that I haven't heard the music these bands do. I have heard it. Which is how I know that it does nothing for me. If you like it, that's great. More stuff for you to listen to. It's just not for me.

I think the concept of overrated/underrated is all about taste. I don't believe there is some objective hierarchy that determines levels of greatness (and badness). What would such a thing be based on, anyway? How can you "measure" greatness?

Influence, sales, technical skill, etc. are things that could more readily be assessed, but those don't equate to "goodness" in an art form whose value is so tied to what it makes listeners feel.

These conversations often get derailed by self-congratulatory snobbery on both sides of an argument, as people cast their opinions, both positive and negative, as the "right" ones.

While I don't like The Beatles, that doesn't take anything away from the fact that millions do, and hence there is certainly value to their music. On the other hand, while many people are quick to pile upon an artist like Justin Bieber, it doesn't mean that his music doesn't have value to his fans.

You're going for mass, which is another false measure.

As for poor Justin, how can I put it in a way so as not to offend or unnerve?

Pop culture isn't culture anymore, the sixties are over.
Prince and many other artists keep the flame alive.

I dunno, I don't understand why you would limit yourself
to the same kind of experience again and again. I understand because I do it too,
we all need our personal, own indispensable refrains on repeat.

But I'm glad I didn't stop at Elvis the caricature.
And by a strange way, Elvis made me understand the Stooges,
and even Motörhead's Overkill: it's a boogie-woogie song, you can shake your hips to it.
And yes, it's not easy on the ear: it's the sound of raging youth, and it's as potent as Prince's drive.

I'm sorry Emma, you didn't listen to it UNTIL it made you feel something.
If I hadn't pass the first irking listenings of Jeff Buckley's Grace, I would have missed an incredible album,
and an incredible white soul singer, and I would have missed Led Zeppelin.

You gotta untie and tie the knots again, constantly.

And now some twist-bop-hoola-hoop-dowop minutes
offered by our sponsor: sweat (cousin to funk).
Lemmy had a lot to give.

Here's a guy I thought I'd never appreciate, for years.
But somehow Prince's grindings got me to him.

All this shit is three guys, and a wall of amps.
It's like a Wurlitzer gone mad, flashin' frantically, like Stephen King's Christine,
it's an Elvis song with a mad Bayou unreleased track stuck on 78rpm.
It's funny as hell. It's overkill. You gotta shake your booty to it. Just divide by 2.
It's a kids song (Macaulay Culkin's air guitar my ass):

Only way to feel the noise
Is when it's good and loud
So good I can't believe it
Screaming with the crowd

Don't sweat it
Give it back to you
Don't sweat it
Give it back to you
Overkill, overkill
Overkill

On your feet you feel the beat
It goes straight to your spine
Shake your head
You must be dead
If it don't make you fly

Know your body's made to move
Feel it in your guts
Rock 'n' roll ain't worth the name
If it don't make you strut

Man, woman, when did you start being so uncurious?
Your inner fourteen gonna get mad some day.
